Russian Missionary - Doug & Tanya Knight January 1999 Newsletter
The Harvest is Plentiful but the Laborer are few. Mattew 9:37
Dear Friends and Family,
We hope you had a wonderful Christmas and New Year with your loved ones. Tanya and I spent a quiet and enjoyable Christmas together along with Sergei. Her younger brother who is visiting us for several weeks.
December saw the graduation of our first village Bible school in Tarusa, This was a wonderful time for us, and we are still overwhelmed by the gratitude we received from the villagers. Although traveling into the villages involves more difficulty and effort than having students come to us, it's a work we definitely plan to continue. In early February, we will start our next school in Hemke, which is just north of Moscow. We are already good friends with the pastor of the church located there, and are expectantly looking forward to ministering to the local people.
This month, I am beginning my 6th year as a full time missionary. Prior to entering the mission field, I had been a. student, and subsequently a graduate, of Rhema Bible Training Center and Victory World Missions Training Center, both of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Since coming to Russia,
I've taught in a number of Bible schools, as well as traveling extensively, teaching and preaching throughout the country. During one of my early visits into Siberia, I met my wife Tanya, and since our marriage we've worked together as a team in the ministry. Since our return to Russia from our summer trip to America, we've begun doing something new. We are now taking a concentrated basic Bible school to the villages and providing it free of charge to the people, completely at our expense.
The response of these poor Russian villagers to the school we've brought to them has been
tremendous, However, we are having a severe difficulty that I have hesitated bringing to your
attention. Because I have been on the mission field a full 5 years. it may be easy to assume that at this point we are now adequately financed- The truth is, we are not. I refrain from discussing finances more than once a year (which I do yearly in my January news letter), as I have never been comfortable with ministries that make constant financial appeals ,and have insisted upon avoiding this in my ministry-. Here is our situation: We have several churches that help us, along with a handful of friends. We are extremely grateful, yet it is not uncommon for our support to come up $400 to $500 a month short of our minimal needs, In the past, I have quietly offset the difference with my personal savings. This is somewhat embarrassing for me to discuss, that at this point, my personal resources are completely exhausted, and we need help to remain here.
Every Christian has a call to the missions field, either as one who goes or as ore who sends. If you haven't made a regular commitment to missions, we'd like to ask you to prayerfully consider involving yourself with as on a monthly basis. our ministry is producing results, Just this past weekend while ministering in the village of Lukino-Dulyova, 5 people came forward to accept Christ. Wouldn't you like to have a part of this end time harvest? We're not asking anything additional from those who've been helping us other than to please cover our ministry with prayer. Rather, we want to thank you for what you've done, and to believe with us that our needs will he supplied. We want to continue to remain here, teaching Christians and winning the unsaved to Christ.
Sincerely and with much love
Doug & Tanya
